For nearly twenty-five years, yo-yo dieting was a way of life. I would lose 20 pounds, and regain 30 or 40. Then repeat the same self-destructive cycle over and over again.
At one point, I weighed almost 300 pounds. I suffered with asthma, hypertension, and chronic pain in my back and knees. My clothes got tighter and tighter. I hated to look in the mirror. Every day, little indignities chipped away at my self-esteem:
- Going higher and higher in the plus sizes
- Huffing and puffing while walking up a few stairs
- Dirty looks as I took up more than one seat on the bus or train
At this point, I had to take a look at my whole life – my spiritual walk, emotional state, lifestyle, and physical health. I made a commitment to strengthen my spiritual walk with God which helped me get a handle on my emotional eating. I did tons of research and developed a nutritionally sound food plan that helped me lose weight safely, steadily and without deprivation. By focusing not just on what I was eating, but why, and not relying on my own willpower, but God’s, I was able to lose 115 pounds. I have been at a healthy weight for almost 11 years. I enjoy optimal health. I feel renewed, spiritually led and fulfilled. I am incredibly blessed.

Debrah Sarria a bilingual (English & Spanish) Nutritionist, Specializing in Integrative Nutrition, Weight loss, Gastrointestinal issues & Food intolerance. My story began a few years ago when my health deteriorated, I was overweight and tired of visiting different doctors that could not diagnose what was wrong with me. Apparently, I was suffering from Hypothyroidism, but the treatment for this condition (daily dosage of Synthroid) did not work. That is when I decided to investigate, study, and learn everything related to autoimmune diseases, integrative nutrition, functional medicine, and the effects that food has on our bodies.
After several years of studying, I managed to diagnose and treat my health problems through a personalized nutritional plan. I was able to overcome digestive disorders such as leaky gut, insulin resistance, fatty liver, and hypothyroidism. I learned how certain foods affect the body negatively and concluded that in order to be healthy, each person needs an individualized nutritional plan. I do not believe in diets or willpower, just proper planning. I believe it is possible for anyone to lose weight with the proper plan, and dedicated support, and that is my mission here at Elizabeth Madison Nutrition. Esther Tambe MS, RDN, CDN, CDE
Esther Tambe is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. She received her Masters of Science in Nutrition with a concentration in Exercise Science at Long Island University. She also received her Bachelors of Science in Nutrition from Long Island University and Bachelors of Science in Health Science-Public Health at Stony Brook University. Esther completed her dietetic internship at Long Island University. When Esther is not talking nutrition & optimal health, she is traveling to new countries on her bucket list.
Elise Harrison, RD
I am an aspiring registered dietitian nutritionist currently pursuing her master’s in health and nutrition sciences. I am currently a dietetic intern at Brooklyn College, co-chair of the student committee and a member of the social media committee and public policy team at the Greater New York Dietetic Association (GNYDA). I love sharing science-based information via social media. It allows me to reach a larger audience and hopefully move individuals to the contemplation phase regarding their lifestyle and diet decisions. I host local meetups for the National Organization of Blacks in Nutrition and Dietetics (NOBIDAN) and for Diversify Dietetics, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to increasing diversity in the field. I have a strong research background, a passion for integrative and functional nutrition/medicine, as well as an interest in community nutrition, public policy and bariatric surgery.
